Yesterday, my local sewing group had the pleasure to hear Heather Jacks (winner of The Great British Sewing Bee) come and speak to us about her experience on the show. I thought I might get a little star struck meeting her, but from the moment we began to talk I quickly realized that she has the same passion for fabric and sewing like the rest of us. She kindly posed for a picture with DD1 which made her day. I’m sure she will be sharing this picture with her friends at knitting club! :o)
Many of her garments that were made in the show were there for people of look at including, of course, that fabulous couture inspired dress that appeared in the final and secured her the win.
During her talk, she told us about the other contestants and how close they all became after being thrown together in the most unusual of circumstances. People from all parts of the country and all walks of life, but all united by their passion for sewing. The filming took place last Autumn and concluded in October, so Heather has had to keep quiet about her win for several months! She said watching the show back this Spring was interesting, as it gave her a chance to see what the other contestants were working on while she was busy trying to keep her place in the competition.
Each show produced over 100 hours of recordings, which then took 5 weeks to edit into the 1 hour show. The other amazing detail, that makes complete sense but I hadn't really thought of, is although we as viewers only see the contestants, the judges and Claudia, there in the background are 40+ people all doing a job to make sure the right shot and the right sounds were picked up to make the magic of the show...and all the while, Heather and the others had to keep sewing to the time limit! I'm not sure I'd managed that...it's hard enough sewing with the normal day to day distractions!
So what’s next for Heather? Well like so many of us, she wants to inspire the next generation to sew and will be looking to get sewing back into fashion with youngsters. You never what who you might inspire or what it might lead to.
Until next time...♥
