So I've decided to try something else. Anyone who frequents the quilting blogs has probably already heard of Bonnie from Quiltville and her scrap user system...but I hadn't quite got to the point of wanting to adopt it...until today!!! I think the final bit of inspiration came when I saw Katie's clean sewing room (from My Sandbox) and something went click. With an extra spring in my step this morning, armed with a new blade in my rotary cutter; I set to work! I made labels, labelled all the bins and emptied all my scraps into 3 buckets. I then start to press them sorting them into 4 piles: potential strips, potential squares, strings (too small to be cut any further..too big to toss) and the Oh-why-oh-why-did-I-save-a-piece-that-small-pile...the latter all went in a bag ready to be recycled! After a day's work, I'm about 1/2 way there. I already feel like I'm back in control of my scraps..instead of my scraps controlling me!! Hopefully now I'll be able to work on both new projects and scraps projects without that horrible overwhelming feeling that I need to reduce the amount of scraps I have.
Have a good weekend,

I've been thinking about doing this too. So, did you cut the scraps into strips with the rotary cutter? Mine are all odd shapes.
I hear your cries of frustration, Jane. I nearly went nuts into I corraled my scraps into a system. It definitely helps with productivity and in knowing what you have and being able to lay your hands on it when you want it. Happy organizing!
The cutting and sorting always take the longest and for me they took a toll on my feet -- all that standing you know. But once it is done there is such a feeling of accomplishment and you will be able to go back to stitching. Good Luck!
wow I'm impressed. All my scraps are in a huge bin together. Perhaps one day I'll get organized.
I am in the same situation. My own system is not working and I need to adopt Bonnie's method as well. I guess what is tried and true can not be outdone.
Looks great . . . I'm going to be following in your footsteps soon - I need a new system *s*
Good for you Jane - I haven't looked back since I started using Bonnie's system. Have fun scrapping!
*hugs*

I do believe I'll think about organizing my scraps tomorrow! This does sound a bit Scarlet O'Hara, but so far that is my only solution to scrap heaps!
Scraps can make a girl feel a bit crazy...sigh, what to do? Start cutting and sorting! As soon as I get home... :O)
how very organised of you. We shall of course now expect lots of scrappy projects!
I SO need to do this. My only goal for Spring Cleaning is to get a handle on my haphazard piles of fabric and overflowing baskets of scraps. Wish me luck! :)
Hey! That's great! :-)
Ugh, I can't imagine going through my scraps and cutting them all and I'm amazed that you're already halfway thru.
Oh yes, Going through scraps are very though job, isn't it?
I'm trying to control my scraps also but sighs....*LOL*
Have a fun with Bonnie's project! :-)
Wow--I am inspired! My scraps need some serious help...your organization system looks so appealing!! Maybe I'll venture into Bonnie's site and see if I can get as motivated as you!!
Looks great, Jane. Maybe I should think about doing the same. Mine are tangled up in a huge bin.
Good for you! Stay focused and make sure you have plenty of liquids and good shoes. My legs and feet hurt with all the cutting I've been doing. Reward yourself with a scrap quilt when the job is done, you'll love how easy it is to find fabrics to work with when they're organized!
Jane-- the best thing is, now you'll use them! Bonnie's system is the best thing that happened in my sewing studio... in all seriousness. You'll never go back, the organization and control that you feel over your scraps is empowering! Go forth and conquer!!
You must be getting an early dose of spring cleaning fever! When you've finished with your scraps, would you like to help me with my loft?!
Now THIS is inspiring! I have got to do some of that myself!
Hmmm. Thanks for posting -- I hadn't heard of Bonnie's method -- I'm still on the color system but it's not out of hand yet. Soon, very soon ;-).
Once again I'm catching up . . . well done! I think you'll find this method of scrap storage works really well. I know it does for me . . .
