Scraps

I was sorting out some scraps into my scrap bins today and thought I'd take a picture to share with you. They are all sorted by dominate colour and then I have one that is multi-coloured scraps. I'm hoping to have a go at the Mile-a-minute blocks, but want to make them within one colour family. I quite like the idea of a controlled scrappy quilt..does that make sense? (...or perhaps I'm being to anal about the whole thing LOL) I think that idea will work well with most colours, but perhaps not so with the multi-coloured fabric and the white fabric. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do with those...especially since some of the pieces are crumb sized. I look forward to hearing your suggestions..you are all such an inspiring bunch. A controlled scrappy quilt sounds a great idea - a kind of scrappy quilting for scrap quilt phobics! I think a white and creams mile a minute could look very sophisticated and maybe lend itself to a wonderful background for applique...?

If you get any good suggestions, I hope you'll post them. I just got done sorting mine by colors (like your multi-color solution, btw) and I have the same problem!

I'm looking forward to your work on crapquilt. Your sorted scraps looks great. Does your scraps multiply like mine does??

Sorry, I had some fingertrouble! Not crapquilt, but scrapquilt ;-)

I'm afraid I can't figure out what to do with my scraps either. Especially those crumbs! I hate to throw them out but sewing them together is going to take a lot of work. I'm not nearly as good as you are about organizing my scraps!

When I did my hearts and stars over last Christmas I found the whole concept of total scrappy very daunting and could have easily retreated back into a controlled colour zone - however I love to see controlled colour scrappy too - Jeanne in California (Spiral) and Bonnie at Quiltville are past masters at ccs - I love some of their blue and sand quilts for example. The idea of a totally cream and white scrappy as a background for applique sounds fabulous like a wilder version of your flower one you did that I always called 'Trumpet Flowers'. As for the multi-coloured scraps - you can't go far wrong with them interspersed with black - look forward to seeing what you come up with - yours 'the old gas bag' :o)

I'm with you on the control part Jane. I'd love to do a crazy quilt, but I don't think I'm capable of just letting it happen. There has to be some planning involved with these things!

I don't have any suggestions for your crumbs either.

Jane, I almost always do controlled scrappy, so I know just what you mean. I love the photo of your scraps - very evocative!

I understand completely about the controlled thing. I cannot stand chaos. I once tried making a complete scrappy quilt from all my scraps. The little cut pieces of fabric are still in a tote. I just couldn't bear to mix them up in a quilt. maybe you could use the white and multicolored ones together in a quilt. The white will give it some consistency.

Your plan sounds good, I like that idea. I think your white scraps would work if you allowed a little cream in. I have seen some wonderful crazy quilts done in whites and creams. Not so sure about the multi coloureds, why not make up an experimental patch?

I have plans for a crumb quilt but also want to stick with one color family per block. This is my inspiration quilt - I may not use the star applique blocks - I haven't decided yet. It's basically a vertical strippie quilt with row a different color.

Controlled scrappy is a great idea!

I have made 2 controlled scrappy quilts, one was all green - everything from the palest sea foam to the darkest forest greens are in that quilt. My other monochromatic is purple - everything from the reddish purples to the blueish purples are in that one.

I quite agree. I like scrappy to an extent. Like when I choose the fabrics and control the contrast LOL
I have been playing in my scrap bins, but they look nothing as orderly as yours.

Why not combine the multi's and the whites? The white will help the other colors "pop" and should give you some contrast?
